Backgreen Blitz
Backgreen Blitz's are fun community workshops which bring folk together to do up tenement backgreens into beautiful and useful community gardens. Where appropriate, these spaces can be used to grow a wee bit of vegetables and fruit.
The Blitz teams are made up from residents from across their neighbourhood. The principle is that the members of the Blitz teams co-operate to regenerate each others backgreens.
Grow Your Own Edinburgh WebsiteSince 2006, ECBA have supported residents in three 'neighbourhoods' to establish community backgreen sites. In 2010, we hope to continue this work, but rather than take a top down approach, we will be seeking to support self organising blitz teams. We have set up a site called 'Grow Your Own Edinburgh', which we will use to network members of the teams. Follow the links below to join the site.
Northside Group - Leith, Broughton, Hillside, Pilrig, Abbeyhill, and Easter Road.
Westside Group - Gorgie Dalry, Fountainbridge and Shandon.
Southside Group - Old Town, Newington, Marchmont and Bruntsfield

The role of the Blitz teams is not to maintain folks backgreens, but through community action, get them fixed up into a condition whereby they can maintain them themselves. We look to use the ideas of the community backgreen model, edible landscaping, raised beds, plays areas, etc.
We'd like to thank the 'Permablitz' group based in Australia who thought up the idea of a group of Blitzers roving around Melbourne creating beautiful edible landscapes. -
